Today was a long travel day from Taupo to Wellington. We thought it was going to be a boring day but the scenery as we drove down the highway was incredible. We saw snow capped mountains, rolling hills and deep, long valleys. We even saw huge hills where one whole face had carved off leaving a sheer, smooth rock face. Ian thinks that is because the rock is made of volcanic ash which is quite soft.
New Zealand is green, green, green. If you were a cow or sheep, this is the place to be raised. Every paddock is the good paddock. Speaking of food, there is no such thing as a bad wine in NZ. When we have travelled to other countries, we have tried the local drop but, inevitably, have gone back to the Australian and New Zealand wines as the reliable choice. Not only is every wine we have found in NZ delicious, it is way cheaper than in Australia as it is produced locally.
Late this afternoon, we arrived in Wellington. We had no preconceptions about this city but, with only one afternoon driving around, I can clearly say I love Wellington. It is known as the San Francisco of the southern hemisphere and that is so true. A beautiful bay with the city built in the surrounding hills. Wellington is known as the cultural capital of NZ and it totally exudes a cool vibe. Amazing homes in the painted lady style of SF, I was also reminded of the hilly parts of Brisbane like Paddington and Bardon. If I have an opportunity to come back to NZ, I will spend more time in Wellington.
We are staying at the Ridges at Wellington airport as we have a flight to Christchurch in the morning. One of the great advantages is that our room overlooks the runway and we have enjoyed watching all the flights taking off this afternoon.
